View down to the Iskar Gorge - a gorge passing through the Balkan Mountains (Bulgarian: Stara Planina, meaning “old mountain”) in Bulgaria. It connects Sofia and Mezdra. The road and railroad follow the course of the Iskar River through a winding, scenic canyon. Stara Planina is a young mountain. It is part of the Alpine- Himalayan chain formed in the latest Cretaceous-Cenozoic time. Photo by Anton Oleinik, Florida Atlantic University.
